Doe this sound good to you?

I really think this is a mediocre beginning. I like books where the beginning completely throws you off---confuses you, messes with your emotions, or startles you. Despite common belief, vivid description is not the way to begin a novel. Describing the protagonist's father's appearance is not needed and may bore the reader. Make sure you set the scene for the story, not the setting.
