Hole in sump... oil ran out... engine stopped?

ok so my mum was on her way out to meet me at the farm in my brothers golf tdi, she hit a rock in the middle of the road, and didn't notice that there was a half meter wide oil trail behind her... she noticed the oil light on about 1/3 - 1/2 a mile down the road, and then it went out as she turned a corner. the engine then stopped. she started it again and pulled in to the side imediatley, and stopped it. she phoned me and i came out, i got under the car and found a 1 1/2 - 2 inch hole, and could see the crankshaft glinting in there. my question is - what are the chances that the engine is not totall screwed, and that i can just repair the hole or replace the sump, fill it with oil and have it running again... answers are most welcome from those who have had a same or similar problem, or those who have fixed it on sum1 else's car... (crossing fingers)
